Romaji Converter — Hiragana & Katakana to Hepburn Romaji (Passport Style)

Convert hiragana and katakana to romaji with modified Hepburn (macrons), Japanese passport Hepburn (TOKYO, SHIMBASHI) or typing style (toukyou), and convert romaji back to kana.

Convert in your browser · No sign-up

Kana only: kanji are left unchanged because their readings depend on context. Convert names to kana first, then to romaji.

Up to 100,000 UTF-16 units per input and 1,000,000 per result. See the supported formats and examples below.

How to use

  1. Paste text written in hiragana or katakana (or romaji, for the kana modes).
  2. Choose a style: Hepburn with macrons, passport Hepburn, typing style, or romaji to hiragana/katakana.
  3. Convert and copy the result.

Example

とうきょう しんばし → tōkyō shinbashi (Hepburn) · TOKYO SHIMBASHI (passport)

Details and limitations

Passport style follows the Ministry of Foreign Affairs Hepburn table: long vowels are not written (おおの → ONO, ゆうこ → YUKO) and n becomes m before b, m and p (しんばし → SHIMBASHI).

Hepburn with macrons writes long vowels as ō and ū. Whether おう is one long vowel or two sounds (思う omou) depends on the word, which a kana converter cannot know.

FAQ

How do I write my Japanese name for a passport?

Enter the name in hiragana and choose passport style. The result uses the official table; you may request forms like OH for long o, which this tool does not apply automatically.

Why are kanji not converted?

A kanji can have several readings (日 can be nichi, hi, ka…), so reliable conversion needs a dictionary and context. Type the reading in kana instead.

What is the difference between Hepburn and typing style?

Hepburn is for reading (Tōkyō); typing style shows the keys you press in a Japanese IME (toukyou, nn).
