Our neighbor grows tomatoes on a tiny balcony. Every summer he shares the extra fruit with the whole building, and every winter he talks about the seeds he will try next year. A good map does not show everything. It leaves out the noise and keeps the roads, rivers and hills you need, so that a stranger can find the way without asking twice. Software is rarely finished. Each release fixes a few problems, reveals a few more and teaches the team something about the people who actually use it every day. On a clear night far from the city, the sky is crowded with stars. It is easy to forget that the light from some of them left home thousands of years ago. The library closes at nine, but the reading room upstairs empties long before that. By evening only the clock, the radiator and one patient student are still awake. When you learn to type without looking at the keys, your eyes stay on the screen and your thoughts flow faster. Speed comes later; accuracy and rhythm come first. The morning train was quiet, so she opened her notebook and wrote a list of small goals for the week. None of them were dramatic, but each one felt possible, and that was the point. Rain tapped on the window while the kettle started to whistle. He poured the tea, opened the old letter again and smiled at the handwriting he knew so well.
How to use

Example
60-second test, 240 correct characters, 10 mistakes → 48 WPM (240 ÷ 5), accuracy 96%
Details and limitations
Speed counts only correct characters: WPM uses the standard 5 characters per word; for Chinese, Japanese and Korean, which are typed with an input method, the result is characters per minute (CPM).
Pasting and dropping text are blocked. During IME composition (pinyin, kana, Hangul) the text is compared only after you confirm the conversion. Nothing you type leaves your browser.
FAQ
How is WPM calculated?
Correct characters divided by 5 (the standard word length), divided by the minutes elapsed. Mistakes are not counted, so accuracy also affects your WPM.
What is a good typing speed?
Around 40 WPM is a common average for regular computer users; 60–80 WPM is fast, and professional typists often exceed 90 WPM.
Why does the Chinese, Japanese or Korean test show CPM instead of WPM?
These languages are typed through an input method and do not separate words with spaces in the same way, so characters per minute is a fairer measure.
